PEDRA DA GÁVEA (GÁVEA STONE)
The Pedra da Gávea hike has been described as exciting, challenging and unforgettable. The monolith (made up from one single stone) stands an impressive 842 meters off the ground and is the largest seafront stone block in the world.
This walk consists of some myths and legends, the first of which arose in the 19th century: A group of researchers from the IHGB (Historical and geographical institute of Brazil) found marks carved into the rock, thought to be remnants of ancient Phoenician inscriptions.
The trail begins on a stone path, which funnels into the Atlantic Forest. After around a 2h30m climb, we'll reach a small, basic-level climbing section called 'Carrasqueira'. The instructor will help you to do the short climb, using safety equipment (helmet, cords, safety harness etc.) - all the necessary climbing equipment is included. Previous climbing experience is not required; the instructor will give you all the information you need to complete the climb with relative ease. To descend we'll use the same equipment to rappel down. The instructor has total control of the equipment being used, thus providing you with complete safety on this part of the trail.
Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of Rio's main mountains, as well as Guanabara Bay, Ipanema, Leblon, São Conrado, Barra de Tijuca, and the Serrana region.
